New York State Governor Selects Lamoreaux Landing
On August 12 th at Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars, New York State Governor George E. Pataki stood in front of over 200 guests including many local and State politicians, and signed legislation into law permitting the direct interstate shipment of wine in New York State. The very hot temperatures outside of the winery were a reminder of this hot and steamy issue regarding interstate shipping.
This new law follows the landmark
U.S. Supreme Court ruling made
in May, which struck down a New
York law that barred out-of-state
wineries from directly shipping their
wine to New York residents. It also
recognizes the constraints that the
State’s law placed on New York’s
wineries ability to conduct business
in other states.
“New York’s wine industry is one of the fastest growing and most successful segments of the State’s agriculture industry,” Governor Pataki said. “I am pleased to sign this legislation into law that permits the interstate shipment of wine in New York, allowing New York’s wineries to grow by opening the doors to new markets across the nation that were previously closed to them.”
New York Wine & Grape Foundation President, Jim Trezise said, “This new law transforms the New York wine industry from a local curiosity into a national player. In the past 30 years, New York has grown from only 19 wineries to 218 today.”
Also in attendance was Nathan L. Rudgers, Commissioner of the Department of Agriculture and Markets, who said, “New York has a vibrant and growing wine industry that is fast earning the respect and admiration of more and more consumers across the nation and around the world. In 2000, 2.7 million people visited New York wineries.”
Lamoreaux Landing was pleased to host the Governor and his guests at this exciting event. In his short speech to the crowd that gathered to witness the signing, the Governor mentioned that he had enjoyed Lamoreaux wines many times and was pleased to be here at the winery. After the bill signing, the Governor and other dignitaries stayed for a private tasting in the wine cellar and enjoyed a sampling of our current wines.

From the Cellar
With autumn comes the grape harvest that has become the wine cellar’s favorite time of the year. Along with the fruity aromas of wine fermentations, excitement permeates the cellar air as the harvest crew works to turn each load of grapes into high quality wines. Our cellar is especially energized this year as the warm weather over the summer has produced excellent ripening in the vineyard. Our release of next year’s 2005 will be extraordinary.
Our summer was
exciting and busy as
we bottled our wines for release.
Our barrel fermented 2003
Chardonnay is divine. The heady
apple, citrus, and tropical fruit
aromas along with a lingering
full finish will bring sunshine to a

rainy day. Celebrate the change
of the season with our 2002 Pinot
Noir. Its bright cherry fruit and
soft tannins make it a wonderful
complement to the food dishes
of autumn. Pinot Noir matches
famously with turkey.
Be sure to stop by the
winery and pick up a
bottle or two for your
family Thanksgiving
dinner.
During your visit, sneak a peak through the tasting room windows down into the cellar. This is a wonderful chance to catch the crew in full harvest action.
We look forward to
seeing you.
